Got this lens from used mkt while ago with 2 shiny metal ring on the edge. I guess my version is pretty old. very sturdy and well-built. I compared it head to head with CZ 50mm/1.4 MM. i'm amazed by the sharpness of this lens in most conditions. However, in some severe conditions, like shooting under the shade, CZ always has the magic touch. This lens is definitely the best buy. -Michael C.

What's there to say? Good lens, good build quality. Works, period. -CeesDeGroot

It is heavier (better built?) than the Zeiss 50/1.7 -Michael G.

I frankly haven't observed the optical quality that others perceive in this lens. Last one I got with a used camera was an older heavy-metal ML version with the chrome rings, in mint condition. Resolution and contrast wasn't anywhere near the ML 50mm 1.4, and bokeh was inferior to the Yashica 50mm ML 2.0. Maybe the 1.7 is better than the 1.9, but that's about it. -Glen

I own the Yashica 50mm/1.7 ML lens, the second edition since it has no chrome lining on the front rim and aperture ring. Well, I share the same opinion as Glen just above. Disappointingly, the lens is not sharp in rendering in-focus parts of a subject, and the bokeh is too grainy. This statement is most valid in poor lighting conditions, a situation in which the lens gave my photos a surprisingly blurry, undefined, pictorialist-style look. Sharpness is greater with use of a flash, which is not a decent solution. Overall, disappointing. -Sebastian D.
