The yearly board elections are coming up. I’ll be running for another term, mostly because the actual incorporation of SqF is tantalizingly close and I want to see it through .
I’m in a bit of a hurry now, will add some ideas about how I see SqF later on. In the meantime, feel free […]

After a long wait, the MIT Media Lab released Scratch, a great bit of software that lets kids of all ages work on interactive multimedia. The software was built (in Squeak!) by the Lifelong Kindergarten research group, and is great fun for kids of any age (like me).
Download it, pick the sample projects apart, […]

So, since re-joining the hordes of hackers-with-a-regular job earlier this year, I haven’t been able to do much with Smalltalk. Where I work, it’s PHP, Java, Javascript, Perl, shell scripting, etcetera. Since summer, it has been almost exclusively Java for me so it is maybe a good time to share my experiences.
First, Smalltalk has […]

And I mean literally killing - making a system that is essentially alive essentially dead.
Smalltalk, being image-based, has one property that makes it different from superficially similar systems (like, say, Ruby with an IDE) - it is a living collection of objects (or ducks, or turtles, whatever the word du jour for them things […]

Well, finally we have been able to announce that Squeak is now officially Open Source. I still don’t know what triggered this - it seems that Steve Jobs was in a good mood or something , but finally finally there is a version of Squeak that is OSD-compliant, etcetera.
From here, there’s still a long […]

It turns out that since the last demo, some 5 years ago, some people have been silently working on the project, basically restarting from scratch, and ending up with a bit more. Not really […]

It seems that Dr.Dobb’s has taken an interest into Smalltalk lately:
In April, a short note on Seaside;
This week, Georg Heeg noted that an article appeared based on his Smalltalk Solutions talk.
Smalltalk vendors are reporting more business; articles are popping up all over the place (Dobb’s is not the only rag that has noted lately that […]

This demo site shows how Seaside and Scriptaculous are integrated - not only can you see how everything works, but the creator (Lukas Renggli) added ‘view source’ buttons with all the demos so you can look at the actual source code.
The two major things that stand out in the source code: it is all […]

Plopp is the name of a new product by Impara that is marketed as a 3D drawing toy for kids - it uses the “blow up” algorithm most Squeakers know.
Apart from the news that this is a boxed, commercial Squeak product (available in pre-order on Amazon.de, among others), it is a fun toy. […]

Hi all from Brussels - we just finished a day of presentations, ranging from Bryce talking us through Intel assembler to Bert showing us software for kids.
I’m not going to write a long report - first, I still have a bit of a hangover from yesterday, and second, you should have joined if you’re […]
