The strangest press conference ever…

SL Java Conference still #1Ok - I confess. I hang around in Second Life (look for “Marius Maeterlinck”, with a bit of luck I’ll be wearing my Squeak T-shirt later this week :-) ). And I was looking for interesting stuff, when I found out that Sun was holding a press conference over Java’s open sourcing (it’s going to be GPL, but I guess you know that by know - kudos to Sun, by the way, for this choice).

SL Java Conference still #2So, here we were, some 30-40 Second Life geeks, a couple of Sun people, and what I think was a lady from the company that organizes these sort of events in SL. In a sort of theater, only in real theaters you don’t have people flying up and down, creating cups of coffee from thin air, or dressing up as penguins. It was a bit distracting, but still a very nice experience. See the accompanying stills.

Now, if I could only think of something really useful to do in SL… :-)

Stumble it!  Post to del.icio.us

Dell, IBM, and Sun host Second Life Events Today…

Today was a big day for PR in Second Life, as Dell, IBM, and Sun each hosted events. Each vendor is getting coverage from them, but they’re also getting their fair share of backlash. As Michael Arrington points out at…

Heh. I can understand journalists being pissed (read the whole article referenced above for more context) - this clearly was a v1.0 experience, with unclarity about when what started, etcetera.

Luckily, I’m not a journalist. More an interested SL resident who is wondering where this is all going to lead to. And having flashbacks about journalists moaning about virtual press conferences on the web in, say, 1995 :-)

(and, if I were even older, probably having flashbacks about journalists moaning about phone teleconferencing press conferencing back in the, what, ’70s?).
