My guess is that this camera was designed to work with a
mercury battery (probably, PX 625 1.35v -- can someone
confirm this?), which are now banned in the US.

The alkaline substitute is 1.5v, and its voltage output
is unstable. You can get a Wein zink-oxide substitute,
or buy a few spare mercury batteries from someone who
still has them (e.g. from me :-))
